Books on Tape - "The Romanovs" by Simon Sebag Montefiore
Back in the studio after being in Minnesota for a few days. This is my view, isn't it cute?! Andy finally met my twin niece and nephew, and hung out with my parents. I got to go the mall with my Mom, one of my favorite hobbies, and Andy helped my Dad fix their fence. We also saw the new exhibit at the MIA, "Power and Beauty in China's Last Dynasty." It was really beautiful, and loud, but really beautiful. It's fun being back home and walking around the mall at like, 11:00 in the morning. It's nice to feel like I'm skipping school again. It was really easy to skip school. Goth 16 year old Alli would make the rounds at Maplewood or Rosedale - Hot Topic, Shinders (or Barnes and Noble, depending on the mall), then Ulta. If I was really ambitious I would drive to Mall of America, but that was for special occasions. (Like trying on sequin dresses (2003, remember!) for dances I didn't go to.) I don't think anyone noticed? I don't think I got in trouble? I for sure never went to detention or anything. I slipped through cracks easily. But it was nice to watch BBC detective shows with my Dad, shop with my Mom, and hang out with my brother and his family.
Now I'm back home and in the studio again. My friend Emma and I are leading a book club, and the first one is "The Romanovs." I'm not even a quarter of the way through and it's all poisoning, beheadings, painful deaths, and .... bride shows! Yes! The Czar would call teen virgin girls to Moscow and choose a wife. This was like, 1500-1600's and earlier. Needless to say, I was very interested. I figure for my "Hero Goddess" archetype, I wanted her to be involved in a bride show, married to a Blue Beard type. Blue Beard is one of my favorite fairy tales. My girl wouldn't be a virgin though, I haven't decided yet. I like the idea of her being more, um... IDK, in control? Or more aware, I don't want her to be a sacrificial lamb. More like she's tricking a blue beard type into marrying her, or something? I haven't figured it out yet, I've only been drawing her, haha.
I've started my Primordial Dieties, here is the first one, I've been working on it more, I painted the wolves and the hawks. "The Romanovs" is good to listen to for underpainting, I can zone out a little about battles, treacheries, marriages, beheadings, deaths, all of that stuff. And there is a lot for only 1/6 of the way through... Peter the Great will be interesting!
I don't have a name for her yet, but Glenn is the one who is my Mother Earth Type. There is also a Mother Sky/Celestial Mama type that my friend Celine modeled as. And then a Chaos/Emotion/Destruction type that either my friend Amy or Haley May will be. I try to ask what kind of character/goddess my girlfriends identify as. I have an idea of what I think they are, but I try to not put my ideas onto the person. I love having models come into the studio. It's so fun.
I finished the Gilmore Girls set, YAY! Now I have some of my hero girls to work on. This is a Snow White type. I think my painting technique is smoosh, glaze, smoosh smoosh, palette knife scrape, etc, blot out, make monster. I like being excited about painting again. It's also fun painting big.
I've been working on my magic girl universe timeline.
1. Creation Myth, Primordial Beings begining of time, 3 Goddesses
2. Hero Journey, Persephone/Inanna/Eleusinian Mysteries/ Journey to the Underworld and Back 3000-4000 BCE 1 heroine,
3. Magic Girls Present Day 1998-2020? 7 descendants of the Heroine Persephone/Inanna awoken to save the planet/galaxy, ? also go shopping and meet boys/girls. (two of the girls will fall in love but I won't say who until it happens :3 )
It's nice to have a blog to put all of this info in one place. I'm excited to cast the 7 descendants!
I want to watch "What we do in the shadows" now, here are pictures of our BB's when we came home!
